Dental Implants
Dental implants are a great solution for patients who are missing teeth. Implants look and feel like natural teeth and are surgically inserted into the upper or lower jaw without sacrificing the integrity of surrounding teeth. Because dental implants are joined to your bone structure, they help prevent the bone loss and gum recession that is commonly seen when using bridgework or dentures.
Placing dental implants requires several appointments between two doctors. An oral or periodontal surgeon will evaluate the patient’s health and quality of their jaw bone to determine if they are a good candidate for a dental implant. They will take impressions and occlusal records to send to the laboratory to create the final model and an implant stent.
The oral surgeon will use the stent as a guide to place the dental implant in the optimal position. The dental implant, which looks like a screw or cylinder, will require 2 to 6 months to heal and bond to the bone. At this time, a temporary tooth will be placed over the implant site. Once the site is healed, Dr. Rozenberg will complete the restoration above the gum by placing a permanent artificial tooth over the implant.
Following the treatment, patients must continue to brush and floss regularly and visit Dr. Rozenberg for regular dental checkups. Periodic follow-ups will be necessary to monitor the dental implant and surrounding teeth and gums to make sure they stay healthy.
FAQs About Dental Implants
Are Implant Teeth Harder To Maintain Than Normal Teeth?
Dental implants do provide more challenges when it comes to dental care, but if patients practice proper dental maintenance and visit their dentists routinely, the implant will function like a natural tooth.
Are Dental Implants Better Than Bridges?
In most cases, dental implants serve as better restorations than bridges because they are easier to maintain. However, not all patients are candidates to receive dental implants. Sometimes a patient's oral anatomy is not sufficient for dental implant placement. A thorough dental evaluation is necessary before either option is recommended.
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
Dental implants can last as long as 20 years, providing patients care for and maintain them properly.
