Crown Lengthening
A crown lengthening procedure is necessary when there is not enough tooth structure above the gum to support a filling or crown. Severe tooth decay or injury can result in teeth that are broken or destroyed below the gum line. A crown lengthening procedure will adjust the gum line and expose more of the natural tooth to provide more stability for any necessary restorations.
A crown lengthening procedure can also be used to help reduce a "gummy" smile. This occurs when the gum extends too far down the length of the teeth, causing the teeth to appear short. With a crown lengthening, some of the gum tissue surrounding the upper teeth can be removed to reveal more of the natural tooth, creating a natural look and improved smile with greater symmetry at the gum line.
Crown lengthening is performed under a local anesthetic and can be combined with sedation for patients who are anxious about dental treatments. During the crown lengthening procedure, excess gum and bone tissue is removed through an incision that flaps the gums away from the teeth. Once enough tooth structure is exposed, the dentist will wash the area with salt water and stitch the flaps back together.
In some advanced cases it may be necessary to remove some of the bone structure as well. The height and width of the bone surrounding the tooth is contoured, and the gums are then repositioned.
You can return to normal daily activities in a few days and will need to return to the dentist approximately 7 to 10 days after the crown lengthening procedure to have the sutures removed. Complete healing typically takes one to two weeks. Dr. Rozenberg will discuss the post-surgical visits included in your treatment plan.
